RBC relay teams go the distance

Red Bank Catholic is taking full advantage of its wealth of distance running talent. The Caseys have been dominating the relay season.

At the recent Monmouth County Relay Championships at the John Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River, RBC's girls won both the distance medley relay and the 4x800, turning in the state's fastest time of the season in the latter.

The quartet of Liana Marzano, Michelle Capozzi, Carol Chanik and Molly McNamara ran off and hid from the field in the 4x800, cranking out a 9:39.54.

"That's our fastest opener," said RBC coach Rob DeFilippis.

Highlights of the race were the personal best 2:24 by Capozzi and McNamara's 2:19 anchor.

In the DMR, McNamara's 3:45 opening 1,200-meter leg had the Caseys in charge, and RBC went on to win in 12:49.40, the sixth fastest time in the state this winter.

Marzano ran the 400 leg for the Caseys, Michelle Savarese the 800, and Capozzi took the baton for the anchor 1,600.

"They are our two bookends," DeFilippis said of McNamara and Capozzi

Even with McNamara sitting out Friday's NJSIAA Non-Public Schools State Relays (she ran the mile at the Yale Invitational), the Caseys won the state title in a Group record 9:48.94, breaking the record set by RBC's 2008 team of 9:54.72.

Marzano, Katie Rochford, Savarese and Capozzi made up this team.

At the Yale Classic in New Haven on Saturday, McNamara ran a personal best 5:05.06 in finishing fifth in the mile.

The team of Savarese, Chanik, Rochford and Hannah Eckstein took fifth in the DMR at the state meet (13:23.08).

DeFilippis said the team is looking to run quicker in the DMR before the season is out.

RBC's sprinters made their presence felt at the state relays, taking second in the 4x400. Sophia Fliss-Saime, Alexandra Mc- Chahill, Courtney Gannon and Adriana Tacopino clocked 4:12.73.

RBC is also looking to put together a pretty fast boys DMR. Kevin Byrne and Bobby McGann are the bookends of this team. Byrne, a sophomore, has already run a 1:58.7 800-meter and a 4:23.33 mile.

Kyle Clonan and Mike Quinn are the candidates for the 800-meter, with Rob Devine shaping up as the 400 sprinter.

Clonan, Quinn, McGann and Sean Gleason were fifth at the relay state championships in the 4x800 (8:27.01).

Red Bank Regional's boys put together a competitive DMR team themselves. The Bucs were second in Group II at the state championship. Matt Metlitz ran the anchor 1,600 for the Bucs. Mike Kolodziej ran the opening 1,200 followed by Joe Friscia (400) and Liam Ayres (800). They ran 10:50.73.

Sunday the athletes will return to Toms River for the Shore Conference Championships.
