Students of The Jersey Shore Chinese School, Holmdel, performed for the Rumson Country Day School student body Jan. 26 in celebration of Chinese New Year. The Chinese school's drum ensemble and a dance group performed two dances, a Tibetan Dance and a Comb Dance. The Lion Dance elicited giggles and shrieks from the younger students and the two Chinese yoyo teams each performed to many "oohs" and "ahhs." Rumson Country Day faculty and staff joined in for the traditional Dragon Dance. To celebrate Valentine's Day, the Tinton Falls Library, 664 Tinton Ave., will hold a food drive during February to benefit Lunch Break soup kitchen in Red Bank. A four-week series of meditation classes have begun and will run through Feb. 24, 7:30-9 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County, 1475 W. Front St., Lincroft section of Middletown. The classes are in conjunction with the Dharmachakra Buddhist Center, Maplewood, with ongoing classes in the Red Bank/Lincroft area. The 12th annual Sweetheart Ball to benefit programs and services at the Cancer Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, will be held 7 p.m. to midnight Feb. 7 at the Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown. Honorees Philip and Marilyn Perricone will be presented with the William C. Black Award of Hope for their contributions to the cancer center. The event will feature live and silent auctions, a 50/50 raffle, and music by the Jack Goodman Band. Tickets are $200 per person. The Monmouth Chess School and Club will open its doors Feb. 8 at the YMCA Children's Cultural Center, 51 Monmouth St., Red Bank. The club is open Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. and offers tournaments, casual play and other events. Boards and sets are provided. Membership is $95 per year, or $50 for a half-year, and provides discounted tournament entry fees and play fees. The nonmember casual play fee is $10 per day, and is free for first-time visitors. Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, will present "The Heart Truth for Women" for adults age 50 and older to celebrate Heart Month, 1-3 p.m. Feb. 11 at the SCAN Learning Center, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown. The program will be presented by Ann Maroulis, R.N., of cardiology services at the medical center. She will discuss why heart disease is the leading cause of death for American women and why more women die of heart disease than all cancers combined. The Tinton Falls Public Library will celebrate the spirit of St. Valentine by forgiving overdue fines Feb. 14-21. The Fair Haven PTA will host its 25th annual luncheon and fashion show, "A Silver Celebration by the Sea," at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Sheraton Hotel, Eatontown. Fashions will be provided by Glow and Tula, Shrewsbury. There will also be a chance auction of approximately 150 baskets, a super 50/50 raffle and a grand-prize raffle of a one-week vacation. Tickets are $40 before Feb. 20 and $45 thereafter. Reservations are available until Feb. 23, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
