Red Bank Regional High School, in conjunction with the Red Bank, Little Silver and Shrewsbury recreation departments, will host a series of free coaching clinics at the high school field house. The baseball and softball clinic will be held 7-9 p.m. Feb. 27, and the boys and girls lacrosse will be held 7-9 p.m. Feb. 28. The clinics are open to all youth league coaches and parents. Instruction will be given by high school coaching staff and will include fundamentals, drills, practice schedules and philosophy. Details: 732-842- 8007.

Phoebe Wright, Red Bank Regional High School class of 2006 and student at University of Tennessee, won the Olympic Development division of the 800m with an indoor career-best time of two minutes, 4.71 seconds. She did so handily at the University of Arkansas's Randall Tyson Track Center, punching her ticket in a second event for the NCAA meet in College Station, Texas, on March 13-14. She had previously made the field as a member of UT's distance medley relay unit, which notched an American record with a time of 10:56.40 last weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.

James van Riemsdyk of Middletown is in the running for the 2009 Hobey Baker Award, given to the top collegiate hockey player since 1981. Van Riemsdyk, 18, currently plays for the University of New Hampshire, but was born and raised in Middletown, attending Thompson Middle School, and spending two years at Christian Brothers Academy before deciding to join the USA Hockey program in Ann Arbor, Mich. In his final high school game for CBA he scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Delbarton School in the 2005 Parochial state championship. In 2006-07, he scored 33 goals and 30 assists for the U.S. U18 National Team, and represented the United States at the 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Sweden. The Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in Oceanport is set for Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009. For the first time in over 20 years, fans will decide the color of the traditional Haskell hat. By becoming Monmouth Park's newest friend on Facebook, or by visiting www.mon mouthpark.com, fans can view the four choices and cast their vote for their favorite color cap — red, blue, gray or orange. Voting for this year's hat will run through Feb. 25, with a winner announced shortly thereafter. All paid admissions to the invitational will receive the Haskell hat.

Head Coach Chris Lebreque took five wrestlers from the Shore Wrestling Club to the 35th annual South Plainfield Youth Wrestling Tournament Feb. 8 and all five placed in the top four of their division and weight class. In the PeeWee Division, Mike McGhee of Oceanport took first place at 43 pounds with wins of 14-0, 15-1 and 11-5. Chris Lebreque of Oceanport got caught in a headlock in the semifinals, but came back to a convincing 11- 5 win to take third place at 47 pounds. Al De Santis of Oceanport logged one pin and then wrestled a perfect match in the finals to take first place at 50 pounds. Von Factor of Fair Haven had two first-period pins and won 12- 10 in sudden victory overtime in the finals at 58 pounds. In the Bantam 60-pound division, Curtis Factor of Fair Haven took fourth place.
