Elmer "Ace" Godwin

Mr. Godwin, 88, of Shrewsbury, died Feb. 19, 2009, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, following a battle with leukemia. He was an electronics engineer at the U.S. Army Electronics Command Research and Development Laboratories, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, for 35 years, retiring in 1979. During retirement, he was CEO and director of International Wire and Cable Symposium (IWCS), and owner of the electronics engineering consulting firm, GEF Associates, Shrewsbury. IWCS endowed the Elmer "Ace" Godwin Scholarship at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the all-black 332nd Fighter Squadron, during World War II. He was stationed in Italy from 1943-45, and was a tower operator instructing pilots during takeoffs and landings. He received the Good Conduct Medal, and Distinguished Unit Badge, and in 2007, the Congressional Gold Medal. He was among 150 Tuskegee Airmen who were guests of President Barack Obama at his inauguration. He served on several local boards, including Monmouth County Mental Health Association and Central Jersey Blood Center. He was also the first African American to serve on the board of governors at Monmouth Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Corrynne Farrington Godwin, in 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Mignon G. Williams of Ashburn, Va., and Laurna Godwin Hutchinson of Alton, Ill.; a son-in-law, Sam Hutchinson of Alton, Ill.; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. A funeral service was held at Christ Church, Shrewsbury. Arrangements were by Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank.
