Hawks t&f athletes shine at three meets

Monmouth University's men's and women's track and field teams spread themselves out over the weekend. The Hawks competed at three meets on Saturday, with impressive results at all three.

At the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, junior Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa.) won the hammer throw in an NCAA-qualifying mark of 186-11. Senior Chris Keller (Matawan) was second (179-2).

Victor Rizotto (Southern Regional) won the javelin (196-10).

Former Monmouth All-American thrower Jon Kalnas, now competing unattached, won the shot put, with a string of Hawks finishing behind him; Vincent Elardo (Lacey) was fourth (54-7 ¼), Tom Ciccoli (King of Prussia, Pa.) was fifth (54-3 ¼), and Keller was sixth (54-2). Lundy was seven (54-4 ¼).

In the discus, Keller was sixth (162-1).

On the track, Chris Vuono (Christian Brothers Academy) turned in a 48.54 in the 400 meters and was second. He ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that included Jason Kesley, Eric Fay (Yatesville, Pa.) and Reggie McLeod (McNair Academy) and finished fourth (3:20.08).

For the women, former Raritan High School star Christine Altland turned in the school's third fastest 10K ever, 37:08.30, which qualified her for the ECAC Championships. She finished seventh.

At the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University (Lewisburg, Pa.), Mary Wilks (Bridgeton) was second in the pentathlon. Her point total of 4,336 is fifth best in school history.

In the men's decathlon, Zach Krupoa (Allentown, Pa.) scored 5,300 points, the second best total in school history, in placing 10th.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Michelle Losey (Piscataway), Brittany Gibbs (Old Bridge), Illiana Blackshear (West Orange) and Ajda Dotday (Hawthorne) was third, in 48.95. The 4x400 team of Blackshear, Colleen Ritecki (Springfield, Pa.), Laura Embrey (Shore Regional) and Aracelis Lantigua (Elizabeth) was fourth.

The third meet the Hawks participated in over the weekend was the Rider Invitational. Ex-Raritan standout Valerie Carney won the javelin (122-1). Monica Kock (Matawan), a freshman, was eighth (111- 10).

For the men, Yasser Barr (Middletown South) was second in the 800 meters (1:58.62). Dan Fitzpatrick (Red Bank Catholic) was fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:00.73).

This weekend, the Hawks are going to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Greyhound Invitational. Then it's on to the famed Penn Relays in Philadelphia on April 23-25.
