Golf pro Gaffney qualifies for PGA Championship

Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., is one of the nation's most revered courses.

It will be hosting the 91st PGA Championship on Aug. 13-16, and Monmouth Beach's Brian Gaffney, the head professional at Rumson Country Club, will be there competing against the best professional golfers in the world.

Gaffney, 38, qualified for the PGA Championship, the fourth of the Grand Slam tournaments, by finishing in the top 20 at the 42nd PGA Professional National Championship in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.

Gaffney tied for 13th carding a 3- under-par score of 281. The tournament was played on two par-71 layouts at Twin Warriors Golf Club and Santa Ana Golf Club. The Rumson pro was very consistent throughout the four days with rounds of 71-70-70-70. His closing 70 at Twin Warriors clinched his top-20 position.

This is the second time that Gaffney has qualified for the PGA Championship. He last went in 2000.

Gaffney, who played his college golf at Montclair State University, is one of 20 PGA Professionals who will be competing in the PGA.
