Create good and make a difference next week

It is exciting to hear about AARP's "Create the Good," which has now expanded into a nationwide initiative to encourageAmericans to dedicate time to service.

The point of "Create the Good," a phrase first coined by AARP's founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, is that each of us has something to give that can help others. It might be the gift of our time. It might be doing errands for an elderly neighbor or sweeping their driveway when we sweep our own.

During the week of Oct. 19, the major television networks are incorporating themes of service and volunteerism into their primetime shows and running promotions on "Create the Good."

We can all do something and the "Create the Good" website is a perfect way to get started. It matches people's talents with local organizations and initiatives. You don't have to give hours. You can give minutes and still make a difference.

We're heading into the holidays and many charities expand their activities to help those in need. There are many opportunities for all of us to pitch in and now we have a new way to connect with our communities and neighbors. Try AARP's "Create the Good" at createthegood.org.
