Dery Bennett

Mr. Bennett, of Fair Haven, died Dec. 15, 2009. He served in the U.S. Navy as a “frogman,” the forerunner to the Navy Seals, until 1956, and was the executive director of the American Littoral Society from 1968-2003. While at the ALS, Mr. Bennett served as a mentor to generations of activists and used the Littoral Society as a spawning ground for new organizations dedicated to caring for the coast: Coast Alliance, the New York/New Jersey Baykeeper, The Delaware Riverkeeper Network and more. He held many other diverse positions throughout his life, including newspaper reporter, semi-professional basketball player, assistant president of Corning Community College and president of Clean Ocean Action. Surviving are his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Melanie Bennett of Olympia, Wash., and Becca Bennett of Seattle; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to American Littoral Society, Clean Ocean Action or Fair Haven Fields. A memorial gathering was held at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank, with a service being planned for February at Sandy Hook. Visit www.littoralsociety.org for more information.
