Greg Mortenson to speak at Brookdale
Best-selling author and philanthropist Greg Mortenson will visit Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, 9-10:30 a.m. Jan. 27 for a meet-andgreet with the college community.
Brookdale’s Alumni Association and PTK Honor Society have raised $35,000 in support of Mortenson’s work building public schools in wartorn Afghanistan and Pakistan, for which he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Acting President Margaret McMenamin will confer an honorary Brookdale degree on Mortenson, who is in the process of building a school named for Brookdale.
Mortenson is the co-founder and executive director of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute and is dedicated to promoting community-based education and literacy programs especially for girls in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is also founder of Pennies for Peace, www.penniesforpeace.org, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller, “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time,” www.threecupsoftea. com, and author of “Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” www.stonesintoschools. com.
The event is free and open to all in Warner Center Navesink I & II. (First come, first seated.)
Mortenson will speak briefly and then devote the remainder of his time to meeting guests. Attendees may bring one of his books to sign or purchase one during the event.
