RED BANK — Police Commissioner and Councilman Arthur V. Murphy III announced that Capt. Steven McCarthy will be named the borough’s new chief of police.

Murphy said in a press release that McCarthy’s swearing-in would take place during the borough’s first regular meeting of the year, which will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 11.

Current Chief Mark Fitzgerald, who has been chief for the past seven years, has been using up his accrued time off since he announced his retirement on Nov. 6. In his absence, he appointed McCarthy as acting chief.

Murphy said previously the department would promote from within, choosing the next chief from the pool of the department’s four captains.

He also said the police committee, consisting of himself and council members Michael DuPont and Sharon Lee, would interview the captains interested in filling Fitzgerald’s position and would then make a recommendation to the remainder of council and the mayor.

Besides McCarthy, the pool consisted of Darren McConnell, head of traffic safety; Peter DeFazio, head of the patrol and internal affairs divisions; and Thomas McDonough, head of the service division.

McCarthy has served 23 years with the borough police, making captain in 2007. He was then put in charge of the criminal investigation division.

Borough officials said the decision was made to hold the announcement and swearing-in ceremony separate from the borough’s annual reorganization meeting, which took place on Jan 3., in order to better accommodate the family, friends and colleagues who would like to attend the meeting.
