Area track teams win SC Divisional titles

Long Branch boys, Ocean, Shore girls are winners
The indoor track and field season began in earnest last weekend with the Shore Conference Divisional Championships.

The John Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River hosted the meet held on Jan. 2 and 3.

Long Branch won the boys B North Division on Jan. 3 and Ocean Township’s captured the girls title.

The Green Wave boys edged Monmouth Regional, 85- 76.

On the track, Steve Worsley won the 55-meter dash (6.85) and the 55 hurdles (7.93). Karon Hair was second to Worsley in the 55-meter dash (6.87) and second in the 400 (54.35).

The Wave sprinters won the 4x400 in 3:47.60. In addition to his sprint double, Worsley was second to his teammate Kevin Morris in the high jump. Morris cleared 6-0 to win, and Worsley was second at 5-6.

Monmouth Regional scored big points in the pole vault with winner Brendan Yelle leading a 1-2-3 sweep. Yelle scaled 11-6.

Red Bank Regional runners took the distance races. Patrick Waite won the 1,600 (4:54.30), and Bryan Broderick was first in the 3,200 (10:42.85).

It was Ocean Township’s Daniel Pepitone who won the shot put (43-2½). He was the only thrower over 40 feet in the competition.

Ocean Township topped Neptune, 87-78, to win the girls title.

The Spartans offset Neptune’s wins in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 with huge points in the 55-meter hurdles. Katie Knight (10.00) led a one-two-three-fourth finish in the hurdles that got the Spartans 28 points in that event alone.

Kendra Scott was second to Long Branch’s Octavia Sanders (7.85-8.10) in the 55-meter dash for Long Branch.

Nia Williams gave the Spartans a win in the shot put (32- 1¾).M

onmouth Regional’s Stephanie Skove won the high jump (5-0) and the pole vault (10-0).

Shore Regional’s girls shared the Class B Central title with St. Rose after each team scored 83 points. Rumson- Fair Haven was a close third (72).

Shore’s boys were second to St. Rose (95-59).

Cameo Kirk scored a 400/800 double to lead the Blue Devils. She won the 400 in 1:02.56 and the 800 in 2:209.20.

Kristin Ward picked up Shore’s other win in the pole vault (9-0).

Rumson collected wins in the 55 hurdles with Ali Christ (10.16), the 55-meter dash with Bethany Rue (7.96) and from Courtney Armstrong in the 1,600 (5:49.51).

The Bulldog boys won the 4x400 relay team won in 3:44.87.

Friday, everyone will be back in Toms River for the Monmouth County Relays.
