Night of song and spirituals Jan. 23

RED BANK — Jewish gospel singer Joshua Nelson will appear in concert Jan. 23 for a night of song and spirituals at the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank in a benefit for Congregation B’nai Israel of Rumson.

Black and Jewish, Nelson sings Jewish religious music in the tradition of gospel music.

According to a press release, Nelson grew up attending Sephardic synagogues in Newark, but it wasn’t until after he graduated from Newark’s Performing Arts High School that he brought his Jewish faith and love of gospel music together. While attending the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he began setting Hebrew texts to gospel melodies and creating gospel arrangements of Jewish hymns.

Nelson, who was the subject of a 2000 documentary, “Keep on Walking,” describes his form of music: “I make Jewish music and give it a soul sound.”

The concert will take place at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $45 and $75 and are available at the Two River Theater box office by phone, 732-345-1400, or online at trtc.org.

The premium ticket includes an exclusive reception with Nelson following the concert.

The proceeds from the concert will benefit Congregation B’nai Israel of Rumson. For more information, email joshuanelsonevent@ cbirumson.org.
