RBC, Long Branch win pair of county relay titles

Utilizing their cross country prowess, Red Bank Catholic runners scored a pair of victories at the Monmouth County Relays.

It was MaryKate Byrne, Lindsey Bellaran, Liana Marzano and Molly McNamara who teamed up to win the 4x800-meter relay in 9:36.83 by almost 30 seconds.

For the distance medley, it was McNamara, Bellaran, Carol Chanik and Michelle Capozzi combining to take first in 12:49.59. This was another dominating win by the Caseys who finished 48 seconds up on runner up Shore Regional.

The two wins helped the RBC girls finish second to Freehold Township, 44-28, at the Jan. 8 relays held in Toms River in the John Bennett Indoor Complex.

Monmouth Regional won the pole vault with Stephanie Skove scaling 11-0, a foot better than anyone else. Bridget Keough cleared 8-0 to give the Falcons the winning 19-0 total.

Long Branch’s boys also won two relay events.

The Green Wave’s sprinters took the 4x200 relay. Steve Worsley, Miles Shuler- Foster, Marcus McKenzie and Karon Hair won in1:36.67.

Worsley and teammate Kevin Morris each cleared 6-2 to win comfortably in the high jump relay with 12-4.

Long Branch finished fourth with 21 points. Freehold Township beat Christian Brothers Academy by a mere point, 57-56, to win the team title.

The relays continue this weekend with the NJSIAA State Relays back at the Bennett Complex. On Friday, Jan. 15, the Group III championships will be held at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Non-Public goes off at 9 a.m. followed at 3:30 p.m. by Group II. On Sunday, Group I starts things off at 9 a.m. with Group IV following at 3:30 p.m.

Individual county titles as well as a team championship will be on the line Jan. 22 when the Monmouth County Championships are held back at the Bennett Complex.
