County libraries mark the Week of the Young Child

To celebrate the Week of the Young Child, April 11-17, join the Monmouth County Library’s Baby Storytime Sessions and take a chance on receiving a free goodie bag of baby books and early literacy information.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The purpose of the week is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, and to recognize the programs and services that meet those needs. The theme this year is Early Years Are Learning Years.

With that in mind, the library is spotlighting its ongoing Baby Storytime sessions, which take place at nine different branches. Several goodie bags will be awarded at each library during the Baby Storytime during the week of April 11. Each bag contains books appropriate to children ages 10 to 24 months, information brochures and a refrigerator magnet picture frame. The bag itself is reusable and can be used as a tote bag for groceries or library visits. The goodie bags are inspired by the Books for Babies program promoted by the American Libraries Association’s national literacy campaign.

According to a press release from the library, numerous studies confirm that reading to infants not only boosts speech and language development, but overall intelligence as well. Babies whose parents frequently read to them know more words by age 2 than children who have not been read to, according to several studies. Reading aloud to your baby introduces concepts such as numbers, letters, colors and shapes in a fun way; builds listening, memory and vocabulary skills; and gives babies information about the world around them.
