      June events at Eastern Branch Library

      SHREWSBURY — The Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library will host events in June for seniors, homebuyers, hipsters and equine fanciers.

      First Friday for Seniors will feature “Avoiding the Fall Zone in the Home” at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4. The program, presented by Jolie Fromm of Nursefinders and John Reagan of Crest Physical Therapy, is designed to help manage problems with balance and provide practical tips on improving safety in the home. A physical therapist will offer a free hands-on balance assessment.

      “Meet the Authors” will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6. Four first-time authors will read from their new books: Margaret H. Van Vechten, of Highlands, who penned a memoir titled “The American Contessa: My Italian Years,” based on her 20-year stay in Italy; Jaee Pathak, Highlands, author of “Reflections,” a debut collection of poems; Bhaskara Rao Achyuthuni, of Sea Bright, author of “Living Out of a Tin Cup,” a novel about an FBI forensics agent; and Ken Sieben, a longtime Sea Bright resident, author of “Joanie M,” a novel about two sailing couples who meet and then must battle tropical storm Emma.

      “Buying a Home?” will be presented by Better Homes Realty, Red Bank, Tuesday, June 8, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m. The program will offer information on how to prepare to purchase a home now that the tax credit is over, and will cover mortgage programs, navigating the real estate market, and steps needed to qualify for a mortgage.

      World Ocean Day will be the topic at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, for children in grades kindergarten and up. Read about the ocean in books, and make a craft, too. Registration is required.

      “Sunnyside Up! An Artist Reception” will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12, with paintings of the beautiful Monmouth County parks, featuring the Sunnyside Equestrian Center, by the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast.

      “Tie Dye @ Eastern Branch” will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13. The hippie inspired fashion trend has returned, so wear old clothes and bring along a clean, white T-shirt or think outside of the box and bring pillowcases, high-top sneakers and socks to make great tie-dye fashion.

      “The Legacy of Brookdale Horse Farm” will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16. June is Horse Month. Thompson Park in Lincroft was once a premier thoroughbred breeding and training facility known as Brookdale Farm. Did you know that the first filly to win the Kentucky derby was foaled at this farm? Learn about the story of Brookdale Farm, the Thompson family and the donor of Thompson Park, presented by Gail Hunton, supervising historic preservation specialist for the Monmouth County Park System.

      A computer class, Computers for Beginners, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 18. Learn what the computer can do and how to get started using one at the library or at home in this introductory program. Learn terminology, components, and types of computers and programs available.

      “Introducing NJCAN (New Jersey Career Assistance Navigator)” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 20. A representative from the N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development will explain the many features of NJCAN, including career choice, occupational training, job hunting, and résumé writing.       Meet the police officers of the Asbury Park Mounted Police Unit along with their equine partners at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11. Come learn about the care and training of the horses and the type of law enforcement work that they do each day. Rain date is June 29.

      A family concert, “Make a Splash Beach Party,” will be presented at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 22. Award-winning singer/songwriter Patricia Shih celebrates the start of this year’s Make a Splash summer vacation reading clubs. Sing and dance along at a library “beach party” and then enjoy reading books, earning prizes, and fun club activities all summer long.

      “Inside Monmouth Park: How to Read the Racing Stats” will be presented at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 23. Sophia Mangalee, marketing and communications coordinator at Monmouth Park, will give an insider’s view of the happenings at the racetrack and the racing statistics listed in the track program.
