Annual Surfside Food Drive under way
SEA BRIGHT — Local charity Move For Hunger will hold the second annual Surfside Food Drive during August, to benefit the Food- Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in Neptune. Patrons of participating beach clubs and local businesses from Sandy Hook to Seaside are asked to donate unopened, nonperishable food items to be distributed to food-insecure families in need throughout the community.
“More than 125,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean counties alone are at risk of going hungry every month — 40 being children,” said Adam Lowy, executive director of Move For Hunger.
Since Aug. 15, collection boxes have been located at each donation location, courtesy of Lowy’s Moving Service, which will also deliver the donations to the food bank.
This three-week food drive will wrap up with a live-music event on the Asbury Park Boardwalk on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-6. For a complete list of donation locations and details, visit www.MoveForHunger.org/Surfside or contact info@MoveForHunger.org.
Move For Hunger works with moving companies across the U.S. to collect unwanted, nonperishable food from those who are relocating and deliver it to local food banks. Founded by the Lowy family of Lowy’s Moving Service in Neptune, this one-year-old nonprofit has already collected nearly 40,000 pounds of food nationwide.
Local collection points include: Chapel Beach Club, McCloone’s Rumrunner, Sands Beach Club, Ship Ahoy Beach Club, Surfrider Beach Club, and Water’s Edge Beach Club, all Sea Bright; Monmouth Beach Bathing Pavilion; Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis; Breakwater Beach Club, Gold’s Gym, McCloone’s Pier House and Promenade Beach Club, all Long Branch; The Deal Casino; Elberon Bathing Club; Allenhurst Beach Club; Serpico’s Pizza and Restaurant, Allenhurst; and Loch Arbor Beach Club.
The Surfside Food Drive began last year in northern Monmouth County, from Sandy Hook to Spring Lake, with 16 participating beach clubs and one public drop-off location, and collected nearly two tons of food, providing over 2,700 meals.
